What is it?

The Educational & Neuropsychological Unit is a psychology service that specialises in the treatment of psychological and academic needs of patients. From the sphere of neuropsychology, and through the application of psychopedagogical performance tests, we assess the specific educational needs and learning styles of children and adolescents in order to improve and optimise their potential and academic performance and, subsequently, also their motivation and self-esteem. We work from a multidisciplinary approach, in coordination with the families and the schools, both in the evaluation process and in the implementation of psychological and pedagogical treatment objectives, as well as in their application and in the proposal of curricular or environmental adjustments to favour the functionality of the child in their everyday activities.


Who is it for?

The service is aimed at children and adolescents in Pre-school, Primary or Secondary Education, enrolled in Spanish and foreign education systems (A-levels, IB, French Baccalaureate). The service also helps families learn how to help their children and works closely with schools in the implementation of pedagogical objectives and measures adapted to the individual educational needs of each case.  

Led by

Raquel Meizoso, a clinical psychologist who graduated cum laude from COMILLAS-ICAI-ICADE University, leads the Child and Adolescent Learning Difficulties Specialist Centre and the Clinical Psychology Unit of Vithas International. After completing her studies, she received a scholarship from Harvard University to follow a master's degree in Psychological Advice and Counselling. Her activity is currently focused on psychotherapy for couples and families, in addition to leading both units of Vithas International cited above.

Over the course of her professional career, she has carried out further research on the impact of education programmes on the high-risk adolescent population, thanks to her collaboration with a range of institutions, most notably the American Institutes for Research. She has also worked in early care programmes for children, often hospitalised, at high risk of delayed maturation due to medical problems.

At an academic level, she is a former teacher at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas / ICADE and Escuela de Libre Enseñanza de Psicoanálisis in Madrid. She has also been a guest lecturer at institutions such as Harvard University.

Moreover, she is very interested in studying psychological problems related to medical conditions.

Distinctive aspects

Our unit includes bilingual and bi-cultural professionals in English, French and Spanish and specialises in working with foreign education systems (A-levels, IB, French Baccalaureate), in addition to the Spanish system. Through the neuropsychological evaluation, we can determine the child’s level of cognitive and emotional maturity, and the psycho-pedagogical support, tailored to the learning style of each patient, optimises academic performance and helps to improve self-esteem and motivation.

  • A Neuropsychological evaluation provides information about the child’s strengths and weaknesses (cognitive profile) to clarify the diagnosis when necessary and, above all, to help propose the most effective subsequent treatment, intervening at the right stages of development.
  • The resulting pedagogical, psychological or family guidance is tailored to the cognitive and emotional and behavioural profile of each patient and to each particular situation, improving the quality of life of the child and his/her family, as well as the academic sphere.
  • Neuropsychological intervention is effective because it works in three areas:
  1. Restoring cognitive deficits and teaching how to compensate for them using the child's own strengths, that is, improving attention, memory, executive functions (organisation, self-control, time management, self-assessment...).
  2. Optimising learning processes and academic performance. Favouring the appropriate learning strategies.
  3. Improving emotional management and social relationships and therefore increasing self-esteem and motivation.

  • Acquisition of practical, effective and customised guidelines to help children on a day-to-day basis.
  • Personalised Counselling Sessions: “professionalisation" of parents.
  • Family therapy, if necessary.

  • Explanation of the cognitive, behavioural and pedagogical profile of the child.
  • Proposal of curricular accommodations, which are effective for adapting to the special educational needs of each pupil.
  • Training for parents and teachers about: neuroeducation, how to improve learning and/or behaviour and motivation from home or from the classroom.
  • Work specialising in foreign education systems (A-levels, IB, French Baccalaureate), in addition to the Spanish system.
