What is it?
At the Coloproctology Institute of Vithas International, we take comprehensive care of all pathologies related with the colon, rectum and anus, from prevention, study and diagnosis, to treatment of coloproctological diseases.
To do so, we use the most advanced diagnostic techniques, as well as minimally invasive treatments, which reduce irritation resulting from them to the maximum.
Doctor Ramón Cantero, head of the Unit, is one of the medical professionals with most experience in colorectal surgery in the national territory. He was a pioneer at an international level in undertaking minimally invasive single-port transanal surgery for the treatment of rectum injuries (2009). He has also implemented laparoscopic surgery of rectal cancer in the Community of Madrid during his tima at San Carlos Hospital Clinic (2003).
His extensive experience, along with the most innovative, minimally invasive techniques, define the pioneering nature of our Unit, equipped with the most advanced technology in the sector.
Colorectal cancer: working towards personalised treatment
In treating colorectal cancer, our work includes a laparoscopic approach to major surgery, whether by local extirpation or pelvic exenteration. Our professionals consider all possible options, examining each case individually and applying the most innovative treatments adapted to the circumstances of each patient.
Doctor Cantero is currently undertaking a line of research that would allow the personalised treatment of colon and rectal cancer. Through the isolation and cultivation of stem cells, specific, personalised chemotherapy treatments can be applied.
High resolution anoscopy for the diagnosis of HPV
The diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HPV infection (human papillomavirus) in the anal or genital region is another of our cutting-edge services.
92% of the sexually active population has had contact with HVP, a virus which is the precursor of cervical, anal and oral cancer.
Our Unit has all the equipment necessary to treat the papilloma infection. We have high resolution anosopy, pioneering in the Community of Madrid, and carry out laser coagulation treatments with infrared.
The high resolution anoscopy is also very useful as a preventive control text for patients who have had an infection in the anogenital tract.
Proctology: various options for treatment of each pathology
In our Unit we treat the different pathologies of Proctology, always applying the most innovative and least invasive treatments.
Doctor Cantero is a pioneer in implementing a new technique for the treatment of haemorrhoids, Doppler guided haemmorrhoidal dearterialisation, with the main advantage of being minimally invasive with greater comfort for the patient.
For fistulas we offer different treatment options, from organic glue to the application of a FILaC laser (Fistula Tract laser Closure), always studying the needs of each patient and personalising treatment to the maximum to obtain the best results.
With anal fissures, the options range from laser treatment to topical methods and traditional surgery.
Digestive system and pelvic floor illnesses
Our Coloproctology Unit also has the collaboration of specialists in the Digestive System, Gynaecology and Urology.
In this sense, other pathologies treated are Inflammatory Bowel Disease, whether ulcerative colitis, in which case ileo-anal reservoirs can be used, Crohn’s disease, diverticular disease, and faecal incontinence, whose treatment ranges from surgery to the placement of devices and materials in the internal anal sphincter.
The pathology of the pelvic floor is also present, more prevalent in women, although not exclusively. In this case, we apply minimally invasive treatments for rectal prolapse, rectocele, enterocele and urinary incontinence.
What does it diagnose? What does it treat?
We treat all coloproctology and digestive system pathologies. Any patient with symptoms related with these may visit the unit for diagnosis and treatment. We offer a fully personalised service and evaluate each case individually.
Furthermore, we also carry out preventive work, essential in certain pathologies such as those related with human papillomavirus (HPV) and colorectal cancer.
